Education:

Ph.D. (Chemical Engineering), granted March, 1991. M.S. Chemical Engineering, 1987. B.S. Chemical Engineering and B.S. Chemistry, 1982. All degrees from University of Washington.

Experience:

January 1995 - present, President and Co-Founder, Eigenvector Research, Inc., a full service chemometrics research, development, consulting and software company. Creator of PLS_Toolbox chemometrics software for use with MATLAB. Have taught over 50 short courses attended by employees of over 100 corporations, including many Fortune 500 companies. Completed consulting projects in a wide variety of applications including development of analytical devices for medical applications and environmental monitoring and fault detection systems for use in chemical processes.

September-November, 2008, Visiting Researcher, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Automatic Control Laboratory, Lausanne, Switzerland. Research focuses on methods for updating multivariate calibration models.

April-May, 1999, United Kingdom Research Fellowship, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Project focused on application of multi-way models to batch process data.

September 1982 - December 1994, Senior Research Scientist, Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory, Richland Washington. Projects included: basic research on ion exchange and precipitation processes for decontaminating radioactive waste solutions and subsequent flowsheet development for these processes.

Research Interests:

All aspects of chemometrics, particularly the application of chemometric methods for chemical process analysis, monitoring and control. Specifically interested in the adaptation of multivariate methods for monitoring and modeling dynamic systems and the application of these methods to analytical instrument calibration. Emphasis has been on the development of methods for detecting process upsets and failing process sensors. Recent research includes development of virtual instruments for optimizing analytical systems, and the application of multi-way data analysis methods to chemical process and analytical data.

Business Areas:

Application of recently developed monitoring and modeling methods to new processes. Maintenance and continued development of state of the art chemometrics software. Teaching university and short courses in multivariate analysis and process model identification. Application of advanced calibration and calibration transfer methods to on-line analytical systems.
